Walker Library Periodicals

The periodicals collection of Walker Library includes magazines, scholarly journals and newspapers that are held in print, microtext and electronic format.

Print and microtext titles and certain electronic titles are found by using the Voyager catalog. Exact holdings and location information is included in the catalog record for each title.

Other electronic titles can be identified by using our Journal Locator, which allows you to search by title or subject for both electronic and print formats.

Periodicals Area, First Floor.

Print periodicals are located on the first floor of the library, at the south end of the building. Staff at the Periodicals Service Desk are available to assist in locating materials. Everything is filed alphabetically by title in one of four areas within the Periodicals section:

  1. Currents: recent issues of magazines and journals that have not yet been bound are on shelves opposite the Periodicals desk
  2. Bound volumes: older issues of most titles are bound together and are shelved on both sides of the aisle beyond the desk.
  3. Reading Room: popular magazines of general interest hang on a wall near comfortable lounge seating. Only the most current issue is available.
  4. Newspapers: current newspapers also hang on the wall near the lounge seating and back issues are located in cabinets behind the wall. Newspapers are usually retained in print for only a few months. Older issues of many newspapers are held in microfilm format on the second floor.

Microtext Area, Second Floor.

Periodicals held in microfilm format are located in the Microtext area on the west side of the second floor. Titles are arranged by microfilm reel number. Exact holdings and reel numbers are included in the Voyager catalog records. Staff at the Microtext Service Desk can assist in finding and using materials.

Electronic Journals.

The library is continually increasing its access to periodicals in electronic form by subscribing to online access for individual titles or purchasing full-text databases that offer a collection of titles. Individual titles may be found by using the library’s Voyager catalog. Titles that are included in full-text databases are located by using the Journal Locator to locate online access by title or subject. However, not every title available through our full-text databases is searchable through the Journal Locator. To be certain that you are aware of all online access in a subject area of interest, please view the relevant subject page on the Research Gateway.
