Henry Clay--a principal promoter of the 1820 Missouri Compromise and the Great Compromise of 1850--was US Senator from Kentucky when this book was published. He would make an unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 1832. This work's last three chapters are thought to be written by poet John Greenleaf Whittier.
