This American edition of Buck's dictionary updated previous editions by the inclusion of illustrations featuring scenes of painful persecution and Christian martyrdom. Indeed, the illustrations' imagery is part of a long historical tradition reaching back to the Reformation and persecution of early Protestants. Oddly enough, the publishers felt such matters were the only ones that would provide "sufficiently interesting variety."
