The Flag of the South Lyrics by Miss Anna K. Hearn Music by Dr. O. Becker Published by C. D. Benson & Co. Nashville, 1861 Sheet music cover Secession brought about something of a boom in music publishing in the South. With Northern trade in printed music, as well as many other products, cut off by the war, entrepreneurs within the South moved to meet local demand for songs. Many of the songs issued by Confederate publishers were the same popular ones that had been printed in the North and available in the South before the War. But many new patriotic songs celebrating the Southern cause were composed as well, such as the item presented here, The Flag of the South, issued by the C. D. Benson company. The copyright notice (not visible on the front cover), announces that this publication was registered in the "District Court of Middle Tenn., C.S.A." |
